"Security Begins in Space" - Industry & Bundeswehr: Together for Hesse

21 April 2026
Telespazio Germany at the Heart of Hesse's Security Dialogue

Almost 600 registrations, high-ranking representatives from politics, business, the Bundeswehr and research and a setting that does full justice to the occasion: Biebrich Palace in Wiesbaden was the venue on April 15th 2026 for the event “Industry & Bundeswehr: Together Strong for Hesse.” The Hessian Ministry of Economics and the Hesse State Command of the Bundeswehr had called for dialogue, and Economics Minister Kaweh Mansoori set the tone: “Peace and security are not a given. They require a strong economic base, reliable infrastructure and a society that holds together.”

Telespazio Germany was right at the heart of it, as an interview partner, as keynote speaker and as a participant in the panel discussion.

Hesse is building resilience – and looking for partners with substance.

Hesse is ready to move from conviction to action, and the planned establishment of a Defence Cluster in the state sends exactly that signal: industry, science and the armed forces are to move into practical application together in the fields of security and dual use.

Brigadier General Holger Radmann, Commander of the Hesse State Command, outlined the operational requirements: in a crisis, Germany must function as the logistical hub of NATO’s Eastern Flank, with up to 800,000 troops and 300,000 vehicles to be deployed and returned. Three decisive capabilities are required to achieve this: first, interoperable civil-military command and control systems (C2); second, high-performance drone and counter-UAV technologies; and third, robust space capabilities - ranging from positioning, timing and navigation and secure satellite communications through to cybersecurity.

Telespazio Germany covers all three capability areas.

Our CEO Sigmar Keller put it plainly across his interview, keynote and panel discussion: ‘Security begins in space’ and that is not a metaphor, but technical reality.

Satellite-based systems are today the invisible backbone of modern societies. They drive navigation systems, secure communications infrastructure and coordinate operations in real time. Whoever controls (or attacks) the space infrastructure influences everything below it. For more than 60 years, we have therefore operated according to the principle of “No Failure in Mission Critical Applications”, as part of the Leonardo Group, embedded in Europe’s security-policy ecosystem.

There is a further dimension: the boundaries between civilian and military technology are blurring. Dual-use capabilities that protect both civilian and critical infrastructure are the core principle of our portfolio. Whether energy supplier, logistics network or production facility, the threat landscape does not distinguish between civilian and military, and the protection toolkit can no longer afford to either.

This is where our capabilities come in:

  • Space & Secure SatCom: We operate ground stations, deliver satellite communications and earth observation services, encrypted, fail-safe and available even when terrestrial networks are disrupted or down. Our SatCom solutions secure communications for government agencies, armed forces and critical infrastructure operators alike.

  • Counter-UAV with DIDIT: Our multi-layer solution DIDIT (Distributed Detection, Identification and Tracking of small drones) combines RF sensors, electro-optical and thermal cameras, acoustics, and active and passive radar, developed to protect critical infrastructure against sabotage, espionage and operational disruption. Integration into civilian and military command systems is ensured via open APIs.

  • Cyber Teams and SOC Services: Professional cyber monitoring, vulnerability assessments and rapid incident response around the clock, scalable and from a single source. For mid-sized companies, we also offer fast drone and cyber assessments with clear situational awareness and actionable recommendations, with no high barriers to entry.

Looking ahead together.

The event at Biebrich Palace marked a starting point, not a finish line. As Hesse moves forward with its Defence Cluster and Germany continues to invest in resilience, the dialogue between industry, the Bundeswehr and politics is only growing in depth and urgency, and Telespazio Germany intends to remain at the centre of it. With technological substance, decades of experience and a clear commitment to thinking security from orbit to the point of application, we look forward to working with all those who see resilience not as a buzzword, but as an operational mandate.
