The Position

Sentinel-3 is one of the major Copernicus missions, jointly operated by ESA and EUMETSAT. The main objective of the Sentinel-3 mission is to measure sea surface topography, sea and land surface temperature, and ocean and land surface colour with high accuracy and reliability to support ocean forecasting systems, environmental monitoring and climate monitoring. The marine data products are produced by the EUMETSAT S-3 Payload Data Ground Segment (PDGS). The S-3 PDGS is a complex system that has to fulfil strict availability and performance requirements.

We are looking for an experienced software engineer to lead our S-3 PDGS maintenance team for our customer EUMETSAT. You will be the technical focal point for a team of expert engineers as well as for the customer.

This position is based at our customer site at EUMETSAT, combined with occasional presence in our head office in the Europahaus in Darmstadt. It is a permanent full time position with the earliest to immediate start date.

Responsibilities/Duties

In this versatile role, you will have a broad set of responsibilities depending on the current operational needs of the Copernicus Sentinel-3 program. Your activities comprise an exciting mix of technical management, team coordination, as well as hands-on investigation of challenging situations. 

Typical activities of your daily work life are:

  • Scheduling team activities and liaising with the customer and other service teams to coordinate tasks and to ensure their smooth completion 
  • Investigating and resolving (potentially critical and challenging) system anomalies that occur during operations of the payload data ground segment
  • Supporting the Operations Team for special events, e.g. validation campaigns, commissioning or major updates
  • Maintaining configuration control and technical documentation, conforming to EUMETSAT standards
  • Leading test campaigns for integration and validation of new software releases
  • Providing 24/7 on-call support on a rotational basis (one week per month)

Qualifications/Experience

  • University degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or other relevant discipline.

Essential Skills

  • Demonstrated experience in the maintenance of data-driven, automated software systems
  • Working experience with UNIX/Linux operating systems
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Analytical mind-set and systematic problem solving approach
  • Proficiency in English

Desirable Skills

  • Familiarity with software integration, verification & validation (IV&V) concepts
  • Hands-on experience with scientific instrument payload data and product processing (L0, L1, L2)
  • High-level programming language (e.g. Java, C++)
  • Experience with scripting languages and databases (e.g. Perl, Python, shell, msql, postgresql)
  • Having worked within the European space industry environment
  • Experience of leading a team on a technical level
