Telespazio recognises the importance of the Air Traffic Management (ATM) research community. We have been actively contributing to the Research and Development for many years through our involvement in ATM research programmes: SESAR 1, SESAR 2020 and the German LuFo programmes.

SESAR 1 and SESAR 2020

The Single European Sky’s ATM Research Project "SESAR" is one of the most ambitious modernisation projects launched by the European Union contributing to the implementation of the Single European Sky.

SESAR’s goal is to define, develop and deploy the technological solutions needed to increase the performance of Europe’s ATM system.

For almost a decade now, Telespazio has been involved in the SESAR programmes, both leading its own research, as well as managing research on behalf of clients. The focus in our own research aims at leveraging our heritage in simulation and performance assessment of Satellite Navigation and applying it to the Aviation and ATM domain.

In SESAR 1, we contributed to Communication, Navigation and Surveillance (CNS) research through in the . Specifically we contributed to the definition of the SESAR Navigation Baseline project (15.3.1), managed the SESAR Satellite Navigation project (15.3.4) and performed modelling and simulation of the satellite based landing system in the SESAR GBAS project (15.3.7). In addition, we contributed to the Performance Assessment of SESAR ATM operation concepts and the evolution of operational KPIs in SESAR project B.05.

In SESAR 2020, we continue to contribute to Research and Development in the aforementioned areas, through participation in the areas of Communication, Navigation and Surveillance (CNS, project PJ14) as well as Content Integration (CI, project PJ19). Specifically for project PJ14, we are collaborating with ANSPs, Airlines, Research Institutes and Industry on (extended scope) Multi-Constellation and Multi-Frequency (MC/MF GBAS).

Within PJ19, we contribute to the Assessment Consolidation and Performance Quality Assurance of the SESAR solutions under validation. In addition, we develop and apply methodologies to quantify the impact of these solutions using of a wide range of performance KPIs. This allows us to estimate the aggregate improvements if the solution is deployed on network level.
